Continuous Glucose Monitoring in Adult Patients Living with Type 1 Diabetes Guidance

SWL clinicians are advised not to prescribe continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) including flash glucose monitoring for patients outside of the above guidance.

Funding on the use of continuous glucose monitoring for people with type 2 diabetes is under review in SWL, in the interim, continuous  glucose monitoring  should only initiated by an appropriate specialist or specialist team* for people with type 2 diabetes who fall within one of  the following cohorts:

  • People on haemodialysis and on insulin treatment, who are clinically indicated, defined as those requiring monitoring more than 8 times daily, as demonstrated on a meter download or on review, in the last 3 months. 
  • People with diabetes associated with cystic fibrosis on insulin treatment.
  • People who are living with a learning disability that is recorded on their GP learning disability register

      *the specialist will initiate the device, train and provide a minimum of 4 weeks of sensors and transmitters.
